Project Summary

The Crow Canyon Road Iron Horse Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing Project will construct a bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing on the Iron Horse Trail over Crow Canyon Road, and remove the existing traffic signal and at-grade crosswalk at the intersection to produce the following public benefits:

  • Improve safety by eliminating conflicts between pedestrians/bicycles and vehicles
  • Improve vehicular traffic flow by removing the traffic signal and at-grade crossing
  • Eliminate unsafe crossing maneuvers by pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Encourage pedestrian and bicycle usage along the Iron Horse Trail
  • Increase trail use for nearby schools by improving safety at the Crow Canyon Road crossing

Current Status

City staff have secured funding for the design phase of the Crow Canyon Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing, and design is expected to begin in 2024.

Estimated Timeline

Design: 2024—2026

Construction: 2026/2027—2028/2029 (funding dependent)

Project History

In 2009, San Ramon approved the San Ramon Valley Bicycle Pedestrian Corridor Concept Plan, which studied the feasibility of integrating a series of proposed bicycle/pedestrian overcrossings along the Iron Horse Trail with adjacent transit and pedestrians oriented land use plans. The Plan evaluated the feasibility of constructing overcrossings to improve access and safety for bicyclists and pedestrians along the Iron Horse Trail and to create a pedestrian-friendly environment at major arterial crossings.

In 2013, San Ramon entered into a contract with Biggs Cardosa Associates, Inc. to implement the Community Engagement/Outreach and Preliminary Design for the Iron Horse Trail Overcrossings at Bollinger Canyon Road and Crow Canyon Road. The Consultant Team, led by Biggs Cardosa Associates, included HNTB Corporation, BKF Engineers, and Alta Planning who led the community outreach component. Extensive community engagement and public outreach was conducted, and in 2015, resulted in the selection of conceptual bridge design types for both San Ramon overcrossings.

Currently, the Bollinger Canyon Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing is in construction, with an estimated completion date in 2025.  The Crow Canyon Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing is expected to begin design in 2024.
