The San Ramon City Council is the City's elected governing body and is responsible for establishing policies, adopting the annual budget, and providing overall direction for the City.
The Council consists of four Councilmembers elected by district, each serving staggered four-year terms, and an elected Mayor who serves a two-year term.
In addition to its role as the City's governing body, the City Council serves as the Board of Directors for the San Ramon Public Financing Authority, the Geologic Hazard Abatement Districts, the Successor Agency, and the San Ramon Housing Authority. Councilmembers also represent the City on the governing boards of several Joint Powers Authorities.
The City Council appoints the City Manager, who oversees the City's day-to-day operations, and the City Attorney, who serves as the City's chief legal advisor.
