Short-Term Rentals

A Short-Term Rental (STR) is defined by the Zoning Ordinance as a dwelling that is leased or rented in full or in part for the purpose of overnight lodging for less than thirty (30) consecutive day terms. Short-term rentals are not considered home occupations for permitting and are treated separately.  Properties that contain a Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) or an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) are ineligible for Short-Term Rental registration.

The City of San Ramon allows STRs to operate within any residential district subject to specific Zoning Ordinance requirements/conditions of operation (Zoning Ordinance section D4-27) and requires annual City registration approval.  For more detailed information regarding the requirements, please review the Zoning Ordinance section D4-27.

To begin registration of an STR, please email a completed registration form below to [email protected], as well as submitting an online Business License Application using the link below. Payments will be processed upon completion of the review.

Please contact the Planning Services Division at (925) 973-2560 or at [email protected] if you have any questions about the Zoning Ordinance requirements or the registration review process.
